LANIKAI MAHOGANY CONCERT
LANIKAI MAHOGANY CONCERT

Maker: Lanikai
Model: LM CCA
Top: Solid Mahogany
Back and Sides: Solid Mahogany
Fret board and Bridge: Rosewood
Saddle and Nut: Bone

I brought it on Ebay as a stripped item. No machine heads, nut or saddle or electronics. There were also some issues with the Maple binding and Mahogany top. I decided to not try to cure the faded streak on the top.

Gold-Plated Kluson type tuners were originally fitted but I used Gold-Plated Grover Sta-tite open gear tuners instead. The missing Fishman Sonitone Electronics were replaced. Natty little controls accessed via the sound hole.

I am definitely not a fan of the blue headstock logo!

VIOLELE PROJECT
VIOLELE PROJECT

I noticed this violin case at a garage sale. Inside was the body only of a full sized violin plus bow. Clearly a Violele in the making.

I chose the concert scale for the neck and fret board. I also had to get the proper violin tailpiece and bridge. I have seen some examples of this conversion with a standard ukulele bridge but that didn’t seem right. Using a proper bridge meant I had to cant back the neck as per normal violin. Because of the tailpiece location you need to use tenor strings as the concert ones are not long enough.

It sounds rather banjo like. This may be because of the thin body but it is definitely a talking piece.

The Lanikai resonator baritone fits nicely in the case so a win-win all round.

RIPTIDE MAHOGANY
RIPTIDE MAHOGANY

Maker: Boulder Creek Guitars
Model: Riptide UC-5NGC
Top: Solid Mahogany
Back and Sides: Laminated Mahogany
Fret board and Bridge: Rosewood
Saddle and Nut: Bone

This was brought with a large full length crack in the top together with a smaller top crack and cracks in finish. These did not go through to the wood below. The repair consisted of pulling the cracks into position and cleating from below. The finish needed touching up to match the original top. I did not attempt to repair the cracks in the finish.

The large side soundhole is novel and provides the user with a local source of sound. My problem with this is that being left handed the sound hole is facing downward and without using a strap my thigh tends to muffle the sound.  Luckily I normally favour a strap when playing the ukulele.

Really nice instrument.

Model: MU50SE

Mitchell make good quility budget ukuleles and guitars. This model is a step up from the more usual all laminate build.

AMMOON CONCERT RESONATOR
AMMOON CONCERT RESONATOR

Maker: Ammoon
Model:
Top: Laminated Mahogany
Back and Sides: Laminated Mahogany
Fret board and Bridge: Walnut
Saddle and Nut: plastic

This ukulele will complete the set of resonator ukuleles. It is based on a standard concert sized ukulele from Ammoon. The resonator cone is a spun out of a standard paint tin lid. The spinning removes some of the stiffness found when using a plain lid. They come in 3 diameters. This on is the middle one.  The strings are held with bridge pins set into the top with an additional block underneath.
